The rolling refurbishment of The Friary School will see the removal of ‘The Statue of Liberty’ mural which has been in place for over 35 years.
The improved and extended facilities – which have included the brand-new Sixth Form Centre, the Learning Hub and several classrooms – will be extended to take in the two main reception areas / lobbies.
The mural portrays an apocalyptic image of the world-renowned landmark and was painted by Nigel Hurst in 1981. Nigel Hurst has since gone on to become Gallery Director and Chief Executive of the Saatchi Gallery in London and several years ago visited the school to review his lasting work.
Matt Allman, Headteacher, said: “The mural has been in place for a very long time and I know Nigel Hurst will know far more about revolving exhibitions than I. We will keep a record of the mural but we feel the time is right to celebrate the work and dreams of current students rather than of those from yester year. History is important, but so is the here and now.”
