All of us have been touched by the commemorations as we run through the 100 year anniversary of the First World War and the respect paid in recent weeks to those who fell at the Battle of the Somme have been amongst the most heartfelt. The battle was the bloodiest and largest of the war on the Western Front and saw over one million men wounded or killed.
As part of our Focus Week on Remembrance, the History Department’s Y9 HLA project tied in well and we have seen students come up with creative and empathetic representations of trench warfare. The amazing detail of the models by Tom Porter and Amelia Philips reflect their understanding and diligence in getting every detail as accurate as possible. Meanwhile, the cake designed and made by Millie Barton stood out in terms of imagination and flair – watch out Mary Berry.
Ian Rose, Deputy Headteacher, said: “We put a great stock in making our students aware of our nation’s history and culture and the sacrifice of those who died in the First World War reflects our country’s dedication to democracy and law. These creative projects reflect the deeper thinking that has gone on in lessons and activities over recent weeks.”
