Last week saw a huge focus throughout the school on the theme of ‘Remembrance’ as we played a busy part in the national commemorations.
The week included special assemblies – which included the playing of the ‘Last Post’ – and the creation of a Remembrance Wall where students and staff made their own poppies and wrote on them reflections on those who had lost their lives in conflict, as well as those dear to them in their family who had passed away. The messages were heartfelt and truly spiritual and particularly reflected well on the many students who contributed.
Elsewhere, there were ceramic poppies glazed and placed across the front lawn of the school – just like those at the Tower of London a couple of years ago – and students spent a lunch time going out on the playing fields to scatter poppy seeds to embed the symbol of remembrance in the grounds of the school.
Finally, there was a poetry and poster competition on the theme which saw the ten winners travel to the Royal Arboretum to lay a wreath of poppies on the same day as Prince Harry led the formal ceremony.
Remembrance is a wonderful time to reflect on our own lives, as well as those around us, and to recognise that sacrifices for others are an important part of past lives but also for our own in the future.
